The Roll of Vestibular System on Neck & Back Pain

Updated: Dec 24, 2024

Almost everyone can relate to having experienced either neck pain or back pain at some point in life and I think we can all agree that it can be all consuming. Most people would also agree that sometimes it can be overwhelming to find a solution to neck or back pain, and the reason why is because of the incredible complexity of the human spine. When you experience pain in your neck or your back it can due to a metabolic problem causing inflammation in your whole body which can manifesting in your highest stress points such as you neck or your back. Another very common possible cause is structural, such as a vertebral subluxation, spinal disc disorder, facet syndrome, muscular trigger points and other pathological processes such as fractures, spinal instability, cancer, tumors and a more common process called central sensitization to pain. All those topics will be discussed further in other blogs, but first we need to address a common underlying problem which can create considerable compensations in posture, joint position, disc loading, trigger points, systemic inflammation and more. The first place to look when attempting to resolve neck and back pain should be the vestibular system.

When the central aspect of the vestibular system is no longer relating to gravity in a balanced way, it changes every other system in the body, from autonomic, cognitive, sensory, motor to emotional. The locations of the brain involved with how you relate to gravity are regions of the Cerebellum called the Flocculus, Nodulus and Uvula.

In 2022, Cedrick Noel, DC, DACNB, founder of In-Home Spine Care, The Inversion Belt & The Decompression Bench, made an incredible discovery while working with colleagues and patients in his office. This career altering discovery could eventually completely revolutionize the rehabilitative world and bring hope to patients how are too often left behind. The Gravity Reset Method can recalibrate your relationship to gravity very rapidly and the best way to describe it is by purposefully moving the head, eyes and handheld target in phase on a linear fashion. Click here to view a 30 min video explaining The Gravity Reset Method more thoroughly. Clinicians around the world are learning this method and reporting unprecedented results, but for your intents and purposes, there are some generic applications that can possibly help if performed at home. Please keep in mind that you might need to see a specialist for a greater level of specificity and effectiveness. Cedrick Noel, DC, DACNB teaches The Gravity Reset Method, for more information about the courses click here.

Home Application

Determine which side of your neck or back is tighter and you will be performing the following exercise moving (side stepping) in that direction.

Step1: Position your thumb in the center of your line of sight while holding your arm outstretched.

Step 2: Keep your eyes focused on your thumb at all times.

Step 3: Step sideways down a hallway while maintaining step 1 and 2. Try to do this for 30 steps 1-3x per day.
